Method

How a IB Maths lesson actually runs

The right course, at the right level

Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation reward genuinely different skills, and SL and HL differ again. Every lesson is pitched at the exact course you're in, not at a generic maths syllabus.

Inquiry and command terms

The IB asks you to investigate, justify and hence show. We practise what each command term actually demands, because writing the right kind of answer is worth as much as knowing the mathematics.

The IA treated as a project

The Internal Assessment is 20% of your grade and is marked on five specific criteria. We work it criterion by criterion, starting with the topic choice that sets your ceiling.

Where students get stuck

The Internal Assessment is where grades are won and lost

The IA carries 20% of the final grade and is marked against five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Most of the marks students lose there are not mathematical at all. They come from choosing a topic that is far too broad, or from using mathematics pitched at the wrong level for the course.

How we fix it

We start with topic selection, because it determines the ceiling before you write a word. A strong AA HL exploration needs mathematics from beyond the syllabus, used correctly and understood. A strong AI SL exploration needs genuine data and honest modelling, including saying where the model breaks down. From there we work criterion by criterion, spending the most time on reflection, which students consistently under-write and which is among the easiest criteria to score well on.

Your plan

A year-long plan for IB Maths

The IB runs on a long timeline with the IA in the middle of it. Starting early means the exploration is done calmly rather than in the week it's due.

  1. 1

    Course and level check

We confirm exactly which course you're in — AA or AI, SL or HL — and where your class has reached. Everything after this is pitched to that.

  2. 2

    Secure the core topics

Algebra, functions, and trigonometry for AA; data handling and modelling for AI. The rest of the course leans on these.

  3. 3

    Calculus and the HL extensions

Worked at your level, with HL students going into the additional content and the optional topic where your school offers one.

  4. 4

    Internal Assessment

Topic selection first, then structure, then the mathematics, then reflection. We work to your school's internal deadlines, not just the final one.

  5. 5

    Paper technique

Papers 1, 2 and 3 as appropriate, including graphical-calculator fluency, which the IB assumes and examines directly.

  6. 6

    Full mocks and final review

Complete past papers under timing, marked against IB markbands, with the formula booklet used the way you'll use it on the day.

A very professional, knowledgeable tutor

“Asad has been consistently teaching my daughter twice a week for AP Math. She really enjoys his way of teaching, where she actually understands. Plus he plans every lesson and tests her to make sure she's got the material. Definitely recommend!”
