Method
How a AP Physics lesson actually runs
Start from the picture, not the formula
Every problem begins with a diagram — a free-body sketch, a circuit redrawn cleanly, a field map. Students who draw first almost never pick the wrong equation, because the diagram tells them which physics applies.
Algebra before numbers
We solve symbolically, check that the units work and that the limiting cases behave sensibly, and only substitute numbers at the end. It's faster, it's what the AP graders want to see, and it means one arithmetic slip no longer costs the whole question.
Write the reasoning, not just the answer
A large share of AP Physics marks sit in the justify-your-answer and design-an-experiment parts. We practise writing those paragraphs to the standard the scoring guidelines actually reward.
Where students get stuck
Why plugging into a formula stops working in AP Physics 1
A student who can confidently solve a block on an incline often falls apart when two blocks are connected over a pulley. It is the same physics with one extra object, but the instinct is to go hunting for a new equation that covers this case. There isn't one, and the search burns exam time.
How we fix it
We drill a single habit instead: one free-body diagram per object, one consistent positive direction along the direction of motion, then Newton's second law written once per object and the pair solved together. It turns an unfamiliar arrangement into a routine. The same habit transfers directly to circuits, where it becomes one loop equation per loop, and to rotation, where it becomes one torque equation about a chosen axis.
